Summary
Alpha/beta Knot Superfamily
The most characterised families in this clan are PFAM:PF00588 and PFAM:PF01746. Both of these families are methyltransferase, which are structurally distinct compared to more classical methyltransferases. More specifically, the members of this clan form alpha/beta knots. Knots are extremely rare in protein structures as they pose a folding problem. The mechanism that allow a domain to be folded as a knot are unclear, but are discussed in [1] and reference therein. All members with known structure form homodimers.
This clan contains 10 families and the total number of domains in the clan is 11262.

Structures
For those sequences which have a structure in the Protein DataBank, we use the mapping between UniProt, PDB and Pfam coordinate systems from the MSD group, to allow us to map Pfam domains onto UniProt three-dimensional structures. The table below shows the mapping between the Pfam families in this clan, the corresponding UniProt entries, and the region of the three-dimensional structures that are available for that sequence.
